Welcome to FreeGeek of Chicago! We are very glad to see you!

Years ago, a wonderful store opened in Portland, Oregon, called FreeGeek, as a place that took in used electronics to be recycled and reused to help save technology from making its way into landfills. Over the years, many more independent stores opened under the Free Geek name. Chicago was one. But as the story goes, the original location on the corner of Diversey Ave and Kimball Ave, was closed due to the pandemic June 25th, 2022.

Fear not though, dear friends! For the loss was great, but joy is coming! Even though we are not affiliated with the original FreeGeek Chicago, we have decided to RE-OPEN FreeGeek of Chicago! Currently operating as a Mom & Pop Shop in the neighborhood of Mt. Greenwood, we seek to take the donations given to us, refurbish what we can, recycle what we cannot fix, and sell the refurbished tech to our community at prices that cause as little harm to our neighbors’ budgets as possible. We know how expensive tech can be. In a world where everyone is expected to have access to the internet for applying to jobs and sometimes doing those jobs, paying bills, attending and completing schoolwork, and many other daily needs, the financial burden of purchasing a computer to do so can be overwhelming. And knowing that offices, businesses, and individual users go and upgrade their equipment, without any second thought about junking it, we felt the need to help interrupt the flow of these electronics to the landfill and help put them in the hands of people who could use them.

If you’re interested in helping us tackle the ever-growing stash of donations, please submit an application! We’d love to have the help.
